Il-40 - the World first jet-engined armored ground strike aircraft. It was designed as a replacement for the Il-10M in 1953. First flight took place on March 7. Offensive armament included bombs, unguided rockets and four vertically movable anti-tank guns under fuselage, like on the Il-20 attacker.
In original configuration Il-40 had side air intakes. During firing trials gun exhaust gases were inhaled by the engines. Aircraft was modified - engine intakes were extended to the very nose, giving Il-40P its shotgun-like appearance.

Il-40 was introduced into series production at Rostov Aircraft Works. In early 60's Soviet leadership canceled numerous aircraft project in favour of ballistic missiles. Among them was Il-40.
