IS-18, V.V.Nikitin

Final attempt of Vasilij V. Nikitin (this time alone) to bring his idea of "Istrebitel Skladnoj" (Folding Fighter) into production. Developed parallel with Nikitin's main job (?), the IS-18 design was finished in 1942.

Suggested engine - Shvetsov M-71F twin-raw radial;

It was apparent that the advantages of the biplane with its' better low-speed handling, and improved maneuverability held no validity in the air combat arena which prevailed. Thus, this concept was finally abandoned.
