Prototype of the MiG-17. Development started in 1949, parallel to the MiG-15bis. The SI was intended to have better transsonic behavior due to redesigned fuselage (of the MiG-15) and entirely new wing (45° inboard and 42° outboard sweep). The engine (VK-1) and armament were same as of MiG-15/SD.
The first prototype, flown January 13, 1950, attained M=1.03, but crashed in March 1950.
The series production started in June 1951, entered service as a clear weather MiG-17.
